Can one rationalize that if Asian parents didn't pressure their kids to date and marry other Asians that interracial dating would decrease? Or would it just increase because there isn't that same pressure?

Asian parenting pressure is pretty much the same, regardless of geography. :)

Anyway, I thought the episode was pretty clever and spot-on. I liked the look on Lucy Liu's face when he said he didn't go for Chinese girls. I've had guys explain to me that they've been pressured to date Asian and they simply got sick of being pressured. I mean, if you want another example... look at John Cho's character in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. He purposely avoided the Asian girl who kept following him around, indicating that ending up with someone like her was expected of him. The same theme was (sort of) covered in The Namesake w/ Kal Penn's character from what I recall.

Yeah. but are the "Asian-Am men that don't date Asian" you know originally from NYC or CA or originally from a "whiter" state where their high school romances/fantasies were non-Asian?

Well I'm in NYC where there are also lots of Asian Ams, and the show's based in NYC.

Honestly, I thought the writer for that particular episode may have been an Asian Am guy.

Hmm. Well I have never met such a man but perhaps that is b/c I come from CA where we have lots of Asian-Ams? But to portray that as quite common and an insider Asian thing, as they do on the show... perhaps that gives out the wrong message, or maybe it opens doors for Asian Am men and women to date non-Asian Am men/women who see the show...

hmm. I think Robert has got something there! perhaps the Asian man who only dates non-Asian is a myth and the Asian-Am men should write in to the white men who wrote that episode? perhaps we can encourage them to have some Asian-Am writers if they don't already?

I also find it extremely odd that they chose to make the Asian man in the situation as the one that doesn't date Asian. I have honestly never heard of this coming out of any Asian man's mouth but have many Asian women who hold this mentality.

They'll make him gay in due time. Heh. The fact that there is such a huge uproar over this just makes it all the more sad and funny at the same time. Nothing will come from this since in the very next episode, she hooks up with yet another white guy.

Yeah, I watched this last night too. I was amazed to see an Asian American couple dating on mainstream prime-time network television! And both the characters were kind of surprising themselves acknowledging that fact as well. Too bad it looks like that is only going to last for another two episodes.

They didn't just go "there" but they went all the way. He says to her that he normally doesn't date Chinese girls and she pretends to be aghast only to realize she hasn't dated an Asian guy since junior high either.
